2016 Fire Services Award for a Project of Statewide Significance winner and finalists

Winner

The Fire Safety Pledge

This project was initiated by the CFA Member Engagement Volunteer Reference Group, a collection of 15 highly engaged CFA volunteers with a passion for community safety and engagement.

The project aimed to increase awareness of fire risk among community members and commit them to some simple actions to increase their preparedness. It also aimed to better recognise and reward brigades for their role in connecting with community regarding fire preparedness

The Fire Safety Pledge was an online competition that ran for eight weeks. The web page encouraged members of the public to commit to one or more measureable fire safety actions that they could take. The actions related to both home fire safety and bushfire safety, giving all Victorians the option to participate.

A total of 779 CFA brigades received at least one pledge assigned to their brigade. The pledges prompted 50% of participants to think about fire safety actions that they otherwise would not have done, while 68.4% reported that they had taken the preventative actions they had committed to in their pledge.
